ARTIST STATEMENT
A writer friend used a word I didn’t know when she described my mixed-media paintings. I immediately embraced it as “my” word.
I love mixing colors, mixing papers, mixing media (and occasionally mixing metaphors) to create paintings, monoprints, hand-made books or just about anything I can “layer up” or deconstruct.
The word is: pal·imp·sest [ˈpaləm(p)ˌsest] n.
1. a manuscript or piece of writing material on which the original writing has been effaced
to make room for later writing but of which traces remain.
2. something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form.
I hope you enjoy seeing what lurks in my work even half as much as I enjoy creating them.
